Ever asked yourself  - I want to Break Free?  But then, disappointment sets in and you give up, just becoming Another one who bites the dust? Ever been a rebel in school and found yourself clapping and punching to We will Rock you? Screaming from the rooftop that - We are the Champions. Nobody listens to the Radio anymore, and yet – they love Radio Gaga. And no matter whether you understand the lyrics or not – the song of the century is Bohemian Rhapsody.

Freddie Mercury and the songs of Queen will live in all of us forever – on our phones, in our cars, and in our hearts …

AIKYA: Celebrating the Oneness of Music.

Date: 20th Jan 2019.

Venue:  St. Andrews Auditorium, Mumbai.

Aikya is an exciting new artistic collaboration between Carnatic musician TM Krishna and two eminent Nadaswara artists Sheik Mahaboob, Smt Kaleeshabi Mahaboob who are based in Thiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu. This fascinating collaboration will also feature Akkarai Subhalakshmi (violin), Praveen Sparsh (mridangam) and BS Purushotham (kanjira).

The nadaswaram is a double reed wind instrument similar to the North Indian shehnai but much longer with a hardwood body and a large flaring bell made of wood or metal. It is considered a traditional and auspicious instrument. Known for its cultural associations with temples and rituals in South India, the nadaswaram also has an established history as a classical music instrument with generations of outstanding musicians; however, it has suffered a loss of patronage and recognition in the last century. Aikya is envisaged as an unscripted new artistic collaboration between a contemporary singer and two Nadaswaram artistes who are carrying forward an age old lineage in which the past and the present intersect to create a unique musical experience.

Karnatic Kattaikkuttu

Date: 19th Jan 2019.

Venue: Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya.

Karnatic Kattaikkuttu comes full circle with a concert at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (Prince of Wales Museum). This is the first-ever collaboration between two distinct art forms: Karnatik music, the classical music of South India, and Kattaikkuttu, a Tamil language-based, the physical and vocal form of rural open-air ensemble theatre with an inherent capacity for comedy and comment. Nowadays these two forms occupy opposite ends of a spectrum that divides the Indian performing arts into “classical” and “folk”.

This unique collaboration was initiated and conceptualized by legendary Kattaikkuttu actor, playwright and director Perungattur P. Rajagopal and his wife Hanne M. de Bruin (performing arts scholar, dramaturg & costume designer) and the well-known Karnatic musicians T.M. Krishna and Sangeetha Sivakumar.

Karnatic Kattaikkuttu is an experimental production in which Karnatic concert music and Kattaikkuttu theatre collaborate on an equal footing. The production explores what both forms share, where they differ and how they “speak” to and with each other. In an exhilarating exchange of repertoire elements, Karnatic and Kattaikkuttu performers present excerpts from two all-night plays, Disrobing of Draupadi and The Eighteenth Day.

T.M. Krishna and Sangeetha Sivakumar will be accompanied by the Karnatic musicians Akkarai Subhalakshmi, (violin) K. Arun Prakash (mridangam) and S. Krishna (ghatam). In addition to P. Rajagopal in the role of Duryodhana on the last day of the Mahabharata war, the Kattaikkuttu cast features actor-singers S. Tamilarasi (Draupadi), R. Devan (Duhsasana), R. Kumar (Duryodhana), M. Duraisamy (1st Kattiyakkaran), A. Kailasam (2nd Kattiyakkaran), A. Bharati (Vikarna), S. Srimathy (Karna), S. Haribabu (Sakuni), S. Gobinath (talam), R. Balaji (harmonium), A. Selvarasu (mridangam & dholak) and P. Sasikumar (mukavinai).

Best Jazz Venue in India

Those of you who have been around from the 1960's through the 1990's will remember the vibrant live music scene in almost every starred hotel in India. Those were the days when you walked into a nightclub like 'Rendezvous' at The Taj Mahal hotel and 'Supper Club' at the Oberoi Sheraton in Mumbai to see curtains going up on a band that was the prime focus of these outlets. Every seat in these restaurants allowed an unobstructed view of the band that performed every night on resident contracts. Today all this has disappeared thanks to some ridiculously high entertainment taxes on live music. Today, non off these hotels have complete bands playing save for a few that feature small duos or solo singers. The Lodhi in New Delhi, recently listed among the world's best hotels, decided to step in and rewind to the good old days. They got Goa's premier jazz quartet 'Jazz Junction' to move to Delhi on a resident contract and the decision has paid off in terms of footfalls generated by the band. Jazz Junction featuring singer Daniella Rodrigues, pianist Tony Dias,
bassist Colin D'Cruz and drummer Angelo Colasco began playing at The Lodhi in June 2018. Four months into the contract the band generated a sizeable following, with quite a few high profile guests choosing to celebrate their special occasion at the Elan bar where the band performs. Against all odds the rewind option proved to be a huge success and hopefully other properties around the country takes the cue to trigger a whole new revival  of live music.
