"Childhood comes with the luxury of dreaming" says the writer & singer of the song Shashwat. Ek Ghar is like a blanket on a cold autumn day. The minute you drape it on, the feeling of warmth and familiarity starts to creep in slowly; it's touching & emotionally familiar. The track lays emphasis on the feeling of love and longing; it is about dreams and desire, like the warmth of a fireplace. Shashwat Sachdev keeps the melody simple and effective with a crescendo at the right points, and the lyrics draw a picture of pristine innocence.

When asked where he pulls inspiration from, he says " I draw my inspiration from real life experiences and people, and my restless mind of course. I’m always thinking about a lot of things, so it’s very therapeutic for me to be able to turn my thoughts into songs"

"I would like to describe my music as painting" says Sha, For me, the lyrical work and poetry in the music is very important. Every person is uniquely different and if you honestly and willingly look at it, the song comes out unique and alive.

The singer Rashmeet Kaur, who has quickly gained national recognition for hit songs such as "Bajre Da Sitta" and "Nadiyon Paar," has sparked the audience with her soulful and eloquent rendition of Bulleh Shah's verses in a stunning Sufiyana single titled "Bulleya O," released by IndieA Records.

Based on the famous poems of the legendary poet Bulleh Shah, this simple yet impactful piece of music is an ode to the fleeting nature of man. Man, with all his idiosyncrasies and vagaries, strives to find his place in the world. Bulleya O is a soft, divine melody invoking the Sufi philosophy of Bulleh Shah.

Rashmeet weaves the verses of the song into a Sufiyana andaaz that undoubtedly has a meditative effect on the mind with the instrumentation and the soothing lyrics. Despite being subtle to the ear, the music keeps listeners hooked for a long time.

Her last release, "Lagan Lagi," stormed the music scene and garnered over 3 lakh views on YouTube. As a singer, songwriter, and composer, Kaur has mastered the art of bringing folk music into the modern world.

Metalhonic New Album Release

Metalhonic is an Indian Modern Metal band From New Delhi, India, formed in 2019. The band comprises vocalist and guitarist Mohit Vig, and Drummer Rahul Rana. The band's debut Album "Origin" was self-released through metalhonic records in 2020. The band has released four studio albums and thirteen singles to date. Their fourth studio album, Sanctimonious To The End, was released on November 4, 2022.

The band's musical style takes inspiration from various sub-genres of metal including, heavy metal, progressive metal, nu-metal, and metalcore. Etc.

This album is a big achievement for the band. It took us almost a year and a lot of fun sessions to create it. After the release of the third record, The sickness is real, we were ready for the new chapter of metalhonic and wanted to make our musical style faster, heavier, and lyrically more aggressive. We wanted to test our limits as musicians and try different vibes, and I think we really pushed ourselves and came out stronger than ever before.

Everything is Produced, Recorded, Mixed, and Mastered at Metalhonic Records Studio, New Delhi.

The genre of the album can be described primarily as Thrash Metal, Progressive Metal, Metalcore, and Nu Metal. Regarding the artwork, the artwork was the first thing that was created before everything to lay the foundation of the album.

The phrase, Sanctimonious, means making a show of being morally superior. The whole idea started with this phrase while I was creating the artwork. Lyrically the album reflects on this topic while taking you on a journey. The main difference is, the story is from the perspective of the antagonist. I think this idea of thinking of yourself as superior to others is selfish and our history shows us the results of having these kinds of thoughts.

The main problem that we faced during the studio session was the production aspect and choosing the right songs for the album. We wanted a particular sound to match the vibe and we wanted to achieve that with the little equipment we have in the metalhonic studio. The struggle was huge but we managed to find the right sound we were after.

The Jazz Bug

If you are looking for an introduction to jazz, this is it. You just have to lay your hands on
Mookerjee’s 100 page book that pours out in simple language the evolution of jazz music.
An authoritative work of research laced with a bit of humor at times, the well-written book,
chronicles jazz down the ages, era to era, how a musical revolution that allowed the African-
American community to raise their voice and be heard, a voice to bring out their miserable lives
and their feelings.
The author begins with the hisotry of jazz music before its birth, its growth in the US almost 100
years ago.  Particularly appreciative, is the sociological and historical implications that the author
provides for various movements, trends and changes that happened down the years from the shift
from New Orleans – the birthplace of Jazz, onto places like Chicago, New York, Detroit,
Memphis to Los Angeles and many other cities. In the process, focus shifting to styles of jazz
which include bebop and cool jazz, Latin American Jazz, Bossa Nova and Gypsy Jazz and more.
Mookerjee is not only articulate in his representation of jazz history, giving good short stories,
but his facts are documented with a suggested listening section at the back of each section of the
book naming composers and performers urging you to give a spin, all this connecting with the
chapter he is talking about.
This move will probably heighten the appreciation of jazz, that the only next left of course is
watching jazz musicians play either live on stage or to put on a favorite DVD.
Jazz music lovers in India will certainly find the book informative, but while the author states in
his back cover note that ‘a brilliant and established form such as Jazz, with its wonderful varied
and intricate sounds merits a large following in India’, he sadly has given a royal miss to
covering the Indian jazz music scene.
Until a few years ago, the well known and well attended Jazz Yatra was a huge crowd puller
with not only Indian acts, but many Indian acts taking part. In recent times, there have been a
host of concerts, stage events and recitals taking place. There was a restaurant, Jazz By the Bay
which changed its name for obvious reasons, which just showed that there was a Jazz following
in India even though small as it maybe. Covering the Indian connect to Jazz, should’ve been a
priority in a book that talks about American and later Europe Jazz. To add to that, a few names
who have been mentioned in the book have performed here. Needless to say we also have a
Godfather of Jazz in India. A chapter or two dedicated to Indian Jazz would’ve given the Indian
perspective of the current scenario here and showcase the young breed who are trying to revive
this sound in their own way. The author’s claim ‘in this country where this music has been
languishing and now almost a forgotten…’ gives a sad story. The dedication page too gives
away what the author intends to do, but doesn’t
That aside, ‘The Jazz Bug’ will appeal to a wide audience, serving as a fascinating introduction
for new fans of Jazz, an invaluable and long-needed book for jazz lovers and musicians, and an
indispensable reference for students and educators. The author has also added a separate chapter

on Jazz instruments detailing their use and the artists that used them. Sound advice we’d say. To
support this, he has also added images of each instrument in a separate chapter. But why, when
the information on the instruments and the images of the instruments could’ve been in one
chapter.
In an age of prefabricated pop stars, rock music, EDM, Bollywood music, it’s good to look back
on the real music, real melodies and a sound that will never die. With a bang on attractive cover
picture showing jazz in all its finery, The Jazz Bug, is a great pocket friendly sized book to own.

'Sarmast' is a tale of losing oneself

Big Bang Music's new addition to their roster, singer-songwriter RAHI's song 'Sarmast' was re-released recently. Born and bred in Kashmir, Rahi’s Sarmast is a collaboration with the Garo tribe of the Tura village, Meghalaya. Sarmast's unique soundscapes are nuanced with Sufi melody garbed in the eastern musicality and Garo lyrics. The songsmith is known for songs like Kasheer and Tu Le Ja Mujhe.

Talking about the song, Rahi said, ‘Music has been a way of storytelling for me since I can remember. Sarmast is a tale of losing oneself to the surrounding. The surprising thing is, the people I collaborated with did not understand the Sufi language, so music was the only bridge that got us together and brought Sarmast to its existence. The fact that we learnt from each other, despite the language barrier inspired me to do this collaboration. The soulful energy the Garo community brought to Sarmast is beyond expression. The mixture of the lyrics and the melody blended together so well that the rawness of the composition defined the feeling we shared while making Sarmast. I believe we all are travellers, journeying our way towards what seeks us and the sole motive of making music is to bring communities together, learn from one another and present the creation like never before.’

Singer-songwriter Sooraj releases a music video

After releasing his 11-song album titled ‘Here We Go,’ Sooraj is now working on bringing those songs to life on the screen with a series of music videos. ‘The Actor,’ he says, is the first of more videos that he has planned. “Moving through the masquerade, I just want to see your face,” pleads Sooraj in his newest music video for his song ‘The Actor.’ In the video, Sooraj tells the classic tale of a young artist with big dreams in the unforgiving world of Hollywood – with a twist.

Sooraj recently graduated from Musician’s Institute, Hollywood with a degree in vocal performance but has been playing the keyboards since age one and a half, passing his Trinity College Grade 8 keyboard exam at age six, and playing multiple instruments such as the guitar, drums, bass while combining them all into music production. His other music videos for the songs ‘Nemesis’ and ‘City Beat’ raked up over 60,000 and 150,000 views on YouTube respectively, while he performed his songs from the album both in the US and in India. He is also a private pilot, and has in fact shot an aerial scene for the music video from the flight deck of a small aircraft.

The video, shot by LA-based filmmaker Jonas Gaida is a reflection on Sooraj’s own stories and observations of the Hollywood glitz and what goes on behind the scenes. “The song is about people who start out with stars in their eyes and end up pushed to the ground by the world around them. It was inspired by true-life stories of people being forced to warp their original identity and aspirations by the big bad world who wants them to be someone they aren’t.” With a smile, he adds, “I walk on the Hollywood Walk of Fame every day and all I step on are pink stars on the boulevard. I thought to myself, is this the pinnacle of fame – to have a star on the boulevard and have people walk over you? That was what sparked the writing of this song.”

‘The Actor’ can be found on YouTube, Facebook and Instagram, and the song is available to stream as part of Sooraj’s album ‘Here We Go,’ on all major platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music, Saavn and Amazon Play.

Seasonal Affected Beats releases new single...

One of the finest jazz drummers in India, Tarun Balani explores electronic music in his solo project, Seasonal Affected Beats. Referring to what he does as ‘improvised electronic music’, as Seasonal Affected Beats he brings the finesse, controlled volatility and discipline of jazz and merges it with malleability of electronic beats.

Imagined as a trans-media electronic project – that was launched in 2018 – Seasonal Affected Beats sees Tarun make music through the prism of his reality, formed by his experiences of the world around him. Themes like mental health, climate change, rapid urbanisation, socio-political issues and digital existentialism play on his mind, and find their way into his lush and tactile productions that pulse with emotions.

2 ° (2 degrees), his new EP, releases on March 13, and was the musical output outcome of his thoughts and experiences of living in a “dystopic, apocalyptic world” (read Delhi’s pollution levels) and the impending dangers of climate change. The name, 2 ° (2 degrees), in fact comes from the Paris Agreement

On Friday, he released a new track called Prelude, from his soon-to-be-released EP, 2 ° (2 degrees).

“The music of 2° (2 degrees) is composed like a suite, with each piece leading into the other and to be considered as separate movements within the suite,” says Tarun of the EP. “The song ‘Prelude’ introduces the listener to the sonic landscape of the EP, from spacey and minimal, to complex and disorderly. I hope to evoke a feeling of intrigue and leave the listeners wanting more,” he adds.

The slow crescendo of synths on ‘Prelude’ conveys the urgency of the situation and, perhaps, of Tarun’s state of mind.

The Journey of life 'Kaafila' by the mall road project

The Mallroad Project – Hindi Indie Rock Band holds musical soiree on different themes which is relevant to today’s youth. It has its roots in Delhi circuits, blending in tradition, musicianship, and imagination.

The band is now releasing its new single ‘Kaafila’ on 14th December. The song is about a sense of belonging with the people we travel this journey of life with and how they give us a sense of purpose.

"Kaafila" - a Hindi word derived from Arabic, means a caravan, a procession or a collectivity in travel -  is a reflection of our lives. An expedition we all start alone towards the destination and as we move, we come across new people in life and a new story begins with each one of them, the kaafila keeps on growing. Often in our lives, we forget to appreciate this kaafila we have, the song is to remind us of how important these people are to us.

We are born alone, we die alone. Between this birth and death, we live alone. Life is so much better when we create the illusion for a moment that we're not alone. In this journey, we come across people concerning family, friends and our loved ones. Our hopes and dreams soon begin to associate with the group of people (Kaafila) that we consider important in our life. We stay together, move together and share our joys and sorrows while we travel together in this journey of life.

The song is set to release on 14th December. The song will be available on the band’s YouTube channel as well  as on all other platforms like Gaana, OkListen and Apple Music.

You can listen the song here: Kaafila - Google Drive

Past songs & releases

The band had lately been consciously talking about critical issues that plague society. Their last release,Thurky Boss, was inspired by the #MeToo movement and candidly addressed the harassment faced by women in their daily routine.  Prior to this, they released Dehshatgard- voice against terrorism – a song that addressed the social unrest in India. They also, had released a satirical political song, Who is the real Pappu?  that asked people to be careful about believing blindingly in what they were told by netas. Through songs such as these, the band has presented their strong opinions on social issues.

“Through our music, we want to contribute to a progressive future and an equal society”.

The band released their first EP Naazi in 2017. The main theme of the EP revolves around exploring the various nuances and emotions of a modern-day romance. The sound ranges from soft soothing melodies to some groovy rock and roll. The EP consists of the titular song Naazi, Nasha, Dil Kyun Khamosh Hai, and one of their most popular songs Tu Kahan.

Their second EP Behti Hawa is an experimental live set performed by the band to capture the raw energy of an in-studio live set-up. Released in September 2018, the EP has a beautiful hard-rock interpretation of A.R. Rahman’s Dil Se apart from the other song Behti Hawa, Tere Khayalon Mein and the captivating Saasein.

One of their songs, Pareshaan gets you thinking as it talks about how we forget to appreciate our lives and get stuck on the darker side of everyday lives.

Composed and penned by Monica Dogra, “Secret Sauce” is a love song about the ecstasy that love sets into motion in one’s life. The song is about how once love enters your life, everything becomes magical and fantastic. Monica Dogra describes the vibe of the song as a sensual mash up of Caribbean island music, reggae (ton), soca and pop.

The music video features Bollywood actor Prateik Babbar co-starring alongside Monica Dogra. This is the second time the duo comes together on screen, since their last collaboration in the feature film ‘Dobhi Ghat.’

Speaking about the release of ‘Secret Sauce,’ Monica Dogra said, “I am very happy that ‘Secret Sauce’ has finally come to life. Working with Keshav was a dream.  Soca has been a genre I’ve never played with as a composer, but I’ve played out as a DJ for so long and Keshav is one of the top soca producers in the world!  He’s worked with the best. The making of the song was like entering an uncharted territory which is just how I like it. “Secret Sauce is so different in multiple aspects from anything I’ve ever done and as a musician, I can proudly say that I made a song that I’d love to listen to on repeat for the first time in my life.” She further added, “While writing the lyrics, my mind was thinking about the immense courage it takes to express one’s affection for another person. Upon hearing the melody of the song for the first time, I just closed my eyes and the lyrics started to stream out of my conscious and onto the paper. It was a beautiful flow... I’m grateful to tap into that. For the music video I wanted to bring back my first costar, Prateik Babbar from the feature film Dhobi Ghat.  That film changed both our lives so much and we’ve maintained a great friendship through the years.  I believe time has made us better. Working with him was sweet! I kept saying it all felt like honey.  Just what ‘Secret Sauce’ is all about.”

Best Jazz Venue in India

Those of you who have been around from the 1960's through the 1990's will remember the vibrant live music scene in almost every starred hotel in India. Those were the days when you walked into a nightclub like 'Rendezvous' at The Taj Mahal hotel and 'Supper Club' at the Oberoi Sheraton in Mumbai to see curtains going up on a band that was the prime focus of these outlets. Every seat in these restaurants allowed an unobstructed view of the band that performed every night on resident contracts. Today all this has disappeared thanks to some ridiculously high entertainment taxes on live music. Today, non off these hotels have complete bands playing save for a few that feature small duos or solo singers. The Lodhi in New Delhi, recently listed among the world's best hotels, decided to step in and rewind to the good old days. They got Goa's premier jazz quartet 'Jazz Junction' to move to Delhi on a resident contract and the decision has paid off in terms of footfalls generated by the band. Jazz Junction featuring singer Daniella Rodrigues, pianist Tony Dias,
bassist Colin D'Cruz and drummer Angelo Colasco began playing at The Lodhi in June 2018. Four months into the contract the band generated a sizeable following, with quite a few high profile guests choosing to celebrate their special occasion at the Elan bar where the band performs. Against all odds the rewind option proved to be a huge success and hopefully other properties around the country takes the cue to trigger a whole new revival  of live music.
