Jugalbandi magic at Paddy Fields

The third edition India’s premiere folk fusion music festival, Paddy Fields 2018, was held over the weekend at the Nesco grounds in Goregaon. This year too the much awaited music festival brought together an amazing line up of artists who succeeded in melding the folk genre from across the country with various other genres to fuse together a vibrant and delightful evening of jugalbandi that was enjoyed by one and all.

The evening got going with an exuberant performance by a group of 28 children in the age group of 8-16 all from the Manganiyar community of Rajasthan. Called the Manganiyar Classroom, it was staged by noted director and playwright, Roysten Abel. It was an inspiring performance by the children who sang and played their hearts out to an appreciative audience.

The next performance was by renowned classical musician and sitarist, Shujaat Khan accompanied by an artist whose name is synonymous with folk music, Malini Awasthi. The duos collaboration rendered a performance that captured Shujaat’s unique sitar style and voice with Malini’s story telling and evocative vocals, bringing out the best of both classical and folk and the applause they received was definitely well deserved.

This was followed by well known santoor player Rahul Sarma and award winning Kashmiri folk singer, Gulzar Ahmad Ganie.  The duo’s performance was marked Ganie’s voice which brought to life the folklore of the Kashmir valley to the melodious accompaniment of Rahul’s santoor. Their set was marked by a more up tempo, pop sound that embraced a wider and younger audience that was well received going by the cheering response.

Finally it was the turn of the headlining act, none other than Bollywood composer/singer Amit Trivedi, featuring folk artists from around the country. As Amit launched into his set he admitted that he was more a composer than a singer, but of course Bollywood is not the usp of Paddy Fields and Amit soon brought on folk artists from around India who perform alongside, some of the best musicians in India including Warren Mendonca and Rhythm Shaw among others. Each of the songs had Amit’s improvisations but allowed the artists shine through, rocking the audience as they sang along.

With that, the curtain down on Day 1 of Paddy Fields 2018.

Take a ride with the Submarine in Space

'Submarine in Space' is a band to watch out for, led by Abhishek Mittal the Vocalist / Guitarist and the face of the band. He is on stage with a Bow or Tie making him stand out among  the other band members Vaibhav Ahuja (Drums), Raaed Ehsan Azim (Keys), Madhur Chaudhary (Bass), Sayan Sinha (Violin/Cello/Flute), but so is their Music which is distinctly different. They are embarking on an India tour to launch their debut album “Wavelengths”. They have also worked a lot on their artwork which is artistic and very apt for their Music. Its like they really made a big effort with their artistic expression and with an eye on Merchandising.

R2R spoke to him about his album and to describe his Music and how the band came about, Abhishek responded saying, “Wavelengths” is a creative endeavor to bring out fresh music from seemingly incongruent sources. Inspired by genres ranging from old school Jazz to Hindustani Classical, he believes that describing his music would involve a series of epithets, simply identifying it as an expression of honesty. Transcribing deep seated emotions to the fret board and thankful to be flanked by musicians who stay true to this spirit.

Wavelengths is a five track Instrumental album which speaks about how people from different time eras are connected with each other. Also we’re a five piece band too, so… Every track captures a different element. For instance 83.83 talks about detachment and love and Meraki talks about doing something you love and giving it your 100%. We also want to keep the tracks open to every person’s perspective because our tracks are instrumental and every person’s imagination is limitless which makes it all the more fun. Wavelengths has the following tracks: Prince Of Rumada, 83.83, Jamilahn , Meraki & Incense.

The five of us have known each other since college. Vaibhav, Madhur and Abhishek Mittal from Hansraj College while Raaed and Sayan studied at Ramjas. We used to meet each other frequently in college competitions and it was my goal to have a band where there is true friendship because whenever you associate a feeling to your music, the audience also feels it and it is the best reward for a musician. We started writing the tunes way back in 2015, in December and instantly connected. For every tune there was only one idea involved - keeping music above everything else and giving each other a lot of space in our tunes. Wanted to see how the instrumental music scene in our country was so we recorded and released our first single Take Off in November 2016 which people accepted with a lot of love.

In September 2017, we decided to initially go with a Four Track EP by the name of Wavelengths but then we composed Incense in January 2018 and felt that instead of an EP we should have an album. Incense is also a special track on the album because it has been recorded live. The whole idea behind doing this was to go back in time where everything was recorded live and get over the fear of making mistakes. Three years have passed since we first met and finally we are here with the launch of our album Wavelengths on 28.09.2018 in New Delhi at Piano Man and are really pumped up about to do this.

“There’s something exciting that happens when different cultures come together as they have in America. One of the things that happens is incredible creativity.”- Louis Armstrong: Following the Footsteps of a Legend
In America’s Musical Journey, Aloe Blacc traces the footsteps of Louis Armstrong from New Orleans to Chicago and beyond, where his impact on jazz and other American musical forms was profound. Born at the turn of the century in New Orleans, to parents who were slaves, Louis Armstrong learned to play the cornet in a boy’s home. A creative prodigy from the start, Armstrong revolutionized jazz with his adventurous solos, bluesy phrasing and bold improvisational style, becoming one of the most influential musical icons of the 20th century.

Elvis Presley: The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll
Elvis Presley is one of the most influential cultural forces of the 20th Century. In America’s Musical Journey, we visit the stops of his early music career, including Sun Studios in Memphis where Elvis recorded his first song in 1954, the Arcade Restaurant where he’d enjoy a milkshake after finishing a record and his home at Graceland. Telephone companies are in love with Music again

The music industry must beware it doesn't get eaten by phone giants' hunger for growth.Telephone companies are in love with music again. Spotify recently announced a partnership with Samsung to become the phone giant’s “go-to” music streaming service, for both its phones and smart/voice assistant Bixby. Spotify’s stock price shot up on the day of the announcement.

Should the music industry be getting similarly giddy?

Spotify’s link-up with Samsung is one of a spate of recent deals between digital platforms and major telephone companies. US-based telco Verizon is now offering a free six months of Apple Music to Verizon Unlimited consumers, while rival Sprint is offering an Unlimited Plus plan that includes TIDAL baked right into it. Even Pandora last week announced that its Plus service will be bundled with T-Mobile for free for a year (so long as customers redeemed their code in time).

Suddenly, the idea of simply obsessing over subscriber numbers feels a little antiquated, when every major music streaming service is further locking in with these phone behemoths.Yet is there a risk that these platforms slowly remake the music industry not for the organic streaming era – but as a sweetener for smartphone plans?

Simon Cowell gets the A&R Icon prize

Simon Cowell will collect the prestigious A&R Icon prize at the A&R Awards in LondonThe UK-focused event, presented by Music Business Worldwide in association with Abbey Road Studios. The A&R Icon award, recognizes an individual who is considered a legend of music business A&R – and someone 'whose professional feats will influence generations to come'.There can be no doubt that Cowell more than fits the bill.

Acts associated with the London-born exec and/or his company, Syco, have sold more than 500 million records worldwide during his career to date. They include everyone from One Direction to Fifth Harmony, Leona Lewis, Little Mix, Il Divo, Camila Cabello, Labrinth, James Arthur and Susan Boyle. The father of record-breaking TV formats such as X Factor and Got Talent, Cowell began his music industry career in the A&R department of EMI Music Publishing in the 1980s, before joining BMG. There, he broke one of Britain's biggest-selling artists of the 1990s, Robson & Jerome, who were stars of UK TV drama series Soldier Soldier. It wouldn't be the last time that Cowell would masterfully combine the power of television with pop music. Cowell broke boyband Five at RCA, then, via his own label at BMG, S Records, broke Westlife – who sold more than 50m records. He then created Syco Entertainment as part of a new deal with Sony Music in 2004.His story from that point on is very much public property.

Cowell fronted Pop Idol in the UK, then American Idol for eight years – which produced the likes of Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood. He also created Syco's own TV properties in X Factor and Got Talent, which have since launched more global superstars than any other talent shows in history.

Artists discovered by X Factor have racked up more than 250 No.1s, and 450 Top 10 records.

Cowell's A&R influence doesn't just touch Anglo-American repertoire, either: in 2015, he teamed up with Univision to create TV show La Banda. The winning group, CNCO, is now the biggest Latin boyband in the world.

Those offering Cowell applause and commendation for his A&R Icon award say it all.

Rob Stringer, CEO, Sony Music Entertainment: “Simon is so omnipresent in pop culture over the past 20 years that it is sometimes overlooked that he is originally and primarily a truly great A&R executive. His track record is up there with the best A&R people of all time if you look at the number of hits he has produced, so I am thrilled he is getting deserved recognition with this particular award.”

Camila Cabello: “Simon knows what makes something connect to another person. He knows if you sing songs that have nothing to do with you or your artistry, people can tell. The most important thing to him is that the music and the artist connect and it all makes sense.

"He knows it’s not just about the song, it’s about the person and their story. He’s been a really great mentor for me over the years and has seen me grow up. That’s the most important thing I’ve learnt from him; the authenticity of your artistry is what will make you connect with your fans.”

Sir Lucian Grainge, Chairman and CEO of Universal Music Group: “I tried to bring Simon over to UMG on multiple occasions, and each time he left me waiting at the altar! A brilliant record maker with phenomenal instincts for crossover hits, I’m thrilled to see him being recognized for his incredible A&R talent."

Legendary songwriter Diane Warren: “Congratulations my friend! Your career as a music man is amazing. I still remember that early hit I had at your house. Unfortunately, it was a car I hit. Now let’s have some more hits – but maybe not that kind!”

Max Lousada, CEO, Global Recorded Music, Warner Music Group: "Simon is a pioneer of the idea that talent can come from anywhere, that music can go global from day one. His journey has been all about the joy of discovery, shared in real time with huge audiences of fans.

"This award gets to the true heart of his success – he’s a brilliant A&R who understands the ingredients of stardom, the importance of great songs, and the power of image. Congratulations, Simon, on this much-deserved honor."
