Music producer and bass player Colin D'Cruz got into music professionally in the late seventies performing on hotel residences. Ten years of six nights a week performances set the foundations for a career spanning over four decades now. Even though jazz has always been his first love Colin has experienced many other genres of music performing all kinds of music with all kinds of musicians from across India and around the world. Besides performing, Colin also hosted a radio show on a premier international radio station and produced a music show for television. He set up an organisation called Jazz Goa that offers local artists a free audio/video production facility and also gives them a place on a global stage through the Jazz Goa app, the first western music app from India. Colin's earliest childhood memories revolve around experiencing live music at events his parents took him, the memory of the magic taking place onstage stage stayed in his sub conscious and turned out to be the deciding factor in his career choice later in life. Jazz turned out to be his first love simply because he felt it was a form of music that embraces all other sounds of music and allows an artist complete freedom of expression. Born and bought up in Mumbai, helped him shape a professional attitude and gave him exposure to many different forms of music including bollywood having performed with the likes of Asha Bhosle, Sonu Nigam and Shubha Mudgal to name a few. Colin moved to Goa in 2008 and went about setting up a studio and producing music both audio and video. Today music is heard on apps most of the time, so the Jazz Goa app was launched in 2018 with over three hundred artists featured and continuously updated with new entries. Local artists found a world-wide audience with the Jazz Goa app and many of them have been discovered internationally thanks to the app. Jazz Goa's music is also aired on the world's number one radio station Jazz FM91. Besides hosting the International Jazz Day event every year in Goa, Jazz Goa has also ventured into hosting events at prestigious international jazz venues like the Jazz Bistro in Toronto. Future plans include inviting international jazz virtuosos to Goa to collaborate and perform with local artists. All this would not have been possible without the support of his wife Diana who manages Colin's many different bands besides handling photography and videography for all Jazz Goa events. Today's kids are tuned to DJ's and EDM, Colin often wonders why anyone would want to pay a small fortune to watch someone press play on a laptop. But to each their own, as far as he is concerned he may be out of sync with today's popular music but he is totally in sync with his soul when he is out there playing his heart out to a few people who still enjoy live music.

Across their catalog, 5SOS has sold more than eight million equivalent album units and sold over 2 million concert tickets worldwide, while cumulative streams of their songs now surpass seven billion. 5SOS – comprising Luke Hemmings (vocals/guitar), Michael Clifford (vocals/guitar), Calum Hood (vocals/bass) and Ashton Irwin (vocals/drums) – are recognized for an array for prestigious accolades including an American Music Award, a People’s Choice Award, two iHeartRadio Music Awards, eight MTV European Music Awards, five ARIA Awards, APRA and two MTV Video Music Awards.
5 Seconds of Summer (5SOS) explore rich sonic textures and rhythms – and reach exhilarating vocal heights – on their new single, “Easier.” The track, which marks the band’s first release since signing to Interscope Records, was produced by Andrew Watt, Louis Bell and Charlie Puth. Grant Singer (The Weeknd, Lorde) directed the mind-bending official video. Listen to “Easier” here https://5sos.lnk.to/5soseasier. View the video HERE.
Says lead vocallist Luke Hemmings of the song, “’Easier’ is the most confident we have been in the first song to be released off one of our records. Visually and sonically it feels like we took what we uncovered about ourselves as a band on the last album and honed in on that sound and aura. I truly believe that ‘Easier’ is the beginning of the best era for 5SOS.”
‘Easier’ is the perfect depiction of the individual artistry within the band and how it comes together to create 5 Seconds of Summer,” says bassist Calum Hood. “This record is something we have subconsciously always needed to release. Accompanied by the euphoria and rawness of the video, ‘Easier’ is the best thing we’ve released yet.”
The band shot the video at two historic Southern California sites – the Bronson Caves in Griffith Park, and Angeles Abbey Memorial Park in Compton.
Director Grant Singer says, “We wanted to bring back the purely cinematic rush of the epic videos I grew up watching in the ‘90’s. Inspired by this idea of rebirth and the four elements: earth, air, fire, and water, we aimed for something dramatic and explosive, like nothing you've seen from the band before.”

It also has features like anonymous chat, direct messaging, original video content under the banner of ShareChat Talkies and accessible in 14 regional languages, ShareChat’s strength has been its popularity in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. ShareChat has seen heavy competition since Chinese media giant ByteDance brought its product Helo and Tiktok, which has gained immense popularity on social media.
ShareChat had accused ByteDance, the Chinese company of copyright infringement alleging ‘adwords ambushing’ In hearing the case last year, the high court had barred ByteDance from placing bids on ‘ShareChat’ as a keyword on Google’s AdWords platform, which ShareChat alleged that the Bytedance had got higher ranking by playing on its search words.
The Delhi high court dismissed ShareChat’s lawsuit against ByteDance of copying its design, infringing its copyright and creating unfair competition on it's app Helo. On orders of the court rule, ByteDance had changed the design of its Indian language content app, Helo, and also tweaked its description on Google Play Store to ‘Share, Follow & Chat’.

A host of YouTubers and social media videographers are up in arms against American giant Sony Music Entertainment for claiming copyright over the state’s temple percussion styles such as ‘pandi melam’ and ‘panchavadyam’.
A controversy is brewing in Kerala over who owns the copyright for the different styles of traditional percussion ensemble that form the crux of the state’s temple festivals. A host of YouTubers and social media videographers are up in arms against American giant Sony Music Entertainment for claiming copyright over the state’s temple percussion styles such as ‘pandi melam’ and ‘panchavadyam’.
They allege that their videos of live percussion ensembles from temple festivals across Kerala on YouTube and Facebook are being marked for copyright violation by Sony Music as they sound similar to the tracks of a film named ‘The Sound Story’, starring Oscar-winning sound designer Resul Pookutty. The multi-lingual movie released earlier this year, whose audio tracks are the copyright of Sony Music, explores Pookutty’s dreams of recording the original sounds of ‘Thrissur Pooram’, Kerala’s grandest temple festival.
“After the release of the film, whenever we upload any video of a percussion ensemble from any temple festival in Kerala, we get a copyright notice from Sony. On the day of the Pooram, while we were recording the ‘melam’ (percussion assembly) live on Facebook, it abruptly stopped and still remains blocked,” said Anto, who operates ‘Live Media’ that covers temple festivals and events on social media.
YouTube and Facebook have automated settings that block content for which copyright is already owned by someone else. Copyrighted content from the top publishers are available on an online database against which content uploaded to most online platforms are matched for violations. Creators of such content can dispute the claim and get the strike released to unblock the content. In the case of Thrissur Pooram music, a match happens easily because in the temple rituals the arrangements are almost exactly the same every time.
Satheesh, another online videographer based in Thrissur, spoke of the same experience while live-streaming the Thrissur Pooram through a Facebook page that has hundreds of subscribers. Minutes after the video was blocked, he got a notification from Sony that read, “Your video has been blocked because it may contain music, audio or video that belongs to someone else. Your video matches 1 minute and 29 seconds of audio owned by Sony Music Entertainment.”
They allege that the videos they post online attract copyright violation essentially because they contain similar audio tracks of different percussion styles like ‘pandi melam’ and ‘panchavadyam’ which were recorded live for ‘The Sound Story’ as well. The ‘pandi melam’ style of percussion involves instruments like chenda (drums), ilathalam (cymbals), kuzhal (a double-reed wind instrument) and kombu (wind instrument). In ‘panchavadyam’, ‘thimila’ (an hour-glass shaped instrument), ‘maddalam’ (drums), ilathalam (cymbals), idakka (hour-glass shaped drums) and kombu (wind instrument) are used. “If I live-stream 2.5 hours of the Pandi Melam, the audio in my video may have matched their (Sony) audio for just one minute. But still the entire 2.5 hours falls under their copyright,” said Satheesh.
Pookutty responded to the controversy in a Facebook post late Wednesday night denying allegations that he had ‘sold the copyright of the Pooram’ to Sony. “To put it clearly, I don’t own the copyright or the IPR of the film Sound Story. It is owned by the producers namely #PrasadPrabhakarProductions and #PalmstoneMultimedia They are the ones who have contractual obligations with Sony Music and Sony Pictures… As far as I know, #SonyPictures has been given the distribution rights of the film Sound Story film only and nothing else,” he wrote.
He also shared a copy of the email clarification he got from Sony which read, “Any content of the album partially or fully by third parties in social media without permissions from copyright hold will get claimed automatically by fingerprinting technology of the partner, no manual claim are done by Sony Music. The contents whatever Sony holds its rights are purely recorded and sound designed and mixed by Resul Pookutty, only for the film ‘The Sound Story’.”
An email with questions to Sony Music went unanswered.
The Paramekkavu temple administration, which participates in the Thrissur Pooram, said it will study the situation and take legal action against Sony and the producers of the film if necessary. “I’m trying to gather as many facts and figures. These are all public events that nobody can copyright. They have been going on for ages and nobody has any copyright over such artistic forms of music. It has not been created either by Sony or by Resul Pookutty. If so many people are facing problems, then it is a genuine issue. I’m taking legal opinion,” said G Rajesh, secretary of the temple administration.

In the epic Ramayana when Jatayu is a demi-god who has the form of a vulture, he sees Ravana abducting Sita, he tries to rescue Sita from Ravana. He fights valiantly but Ravana gets the better of him. Jatayu is remembered for he informs Rama and Lakshmana before dying that Ravana had gone south. But the Jatayu we found on You Tube is a Jazz-Rock quartet from Chennai. Jatayu is Shylu Ravindran-Guitars. Sahib Singh-Guitars, Manu Krishnan-Drums, Kashyap Jaishankar-Bass.Their music is a reflection of modern India - rooted in a centuries old art form, yet current and collaborative in approach and sonic fabric.Formed in 2016,they have been playing local independent venues in Chennai, growing and building their loyal fanbase. Chango Tales,is their debut EP is designed as an enthralling and collaborative audio-visual experience. R2R caught Sahib Singh telephonically to speak on their debut release.
Tell us about your album ' Chango Tales'?
For our album ' Chango Tales' we wanted to tell a story only with music being in the forefront and testing our sonic story telling abilities.Who is Chango ? Chango is I.Chango is you. Chango is the crimson fire that burns bright within.‘Chango Tales’ take you through the emotional Odyssey of Chango.
How was it recording your debut album?
We had an absolute blast recording this album especially with the collaborations from Krond Flast the Swiss based Sax/Violin Duo on 'May I?' and with Holger Jetter on 'Chango' and 'Pazhi'. Having so many different styles and opinions on each and every topic, we always end up having arguments , be it in the jam room or outside. But we use those arguments to our advantage as we learn more about each other and build a bond over these differences and that is what we want to show the world, as to how you can live in harmony with people who are different from you and thrive.
What do our songs mean to us?
They mean everything to us of course.Chango Tales tells the story of Chango, a character we created to explore the emotional content of the songs in the EP. In 'Shringara' explores conception and love - its tumultuous nature brings up a variety of emotions within us - joy, anger, compassion, fear, jealousy, etc. The loopy groove of 'May I?' is us exploring the nature of curiosity and the strange roads that that it can take you through. 'Pazhi' is our interpretation of the mind of a person being abused. The rage, confusion, sadness, fear, that feeling of helplessness, the sheer ridiculousness of being blamed for being abused.'Chango' is our version of contentment. It refers to the kind of post trauma strength. Having survived ups and downs, one is confident in themselves to move past anything that falls in ones path.
How did they come about?
With some of our songs, Shylu, our lead guitarist, had already composed the various melodies involved in the song, and then as a band, we'd spend hours trying out different ideas brought forth by each of us. We'd go through various stages of trial and error to reach the final composition that you would hear at our shows. We also write together from scratch - where the song kinda forms itself from 1 idea that someone comes up with while jamming. Everything we do when composing is in service to the song.
Where do you see yourselves 10 years down the line?
This is probably the hardest question to answer because I'm not sure if any of us have thought that far ahead. We're just busy enjoying the present. We've got concepts for at least 3 more releases to happen over the next couple of years with which we aim to tour the country and the world for our album ' Chango Tales'.

Simon Thacker is a composer, classical guitarist, improviser and ensemble leader whose ever expanding musical world draws on a deep immersion in diverse cultures. He has been described by the media as “one of the most important musicians of his generation". As well as touring as a classical guitar soloist, he has also developed some of today’s most prescient ensembles: Simon Thacker’s Svara-Kanti, a world leading Indo-Western collective which has seen him tour and collaborate at major festivals in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Simon's startlingly original music has propelled many traditions forward and created a new frontier for classical guitar. His pieces have been played on radio in over 50 countries. As an educator, he has been classical guitar tutor at Edinburgh Napier University and Edinburgh College for over a decade. He has performed as soloist with many orchestras, including the RSNO.
Svara-Kanti has just released the epic double album Trikala (the Sanskrit word for the three tenses of time, past, present and future),creating new sound worlds through his immersion in Indian classical, folk and spiritual traditions. After 3 action packed years and recorded in three locations (East Lothian in Scotland, and Chennai and Kolkata in India),it is not fusion but an organic extension of traditions or the creation of new genres. Trikala sees Simon Thacker’s Svara-Kanti metamorphose into a community of different lineups (thirteen performers in all) which each take inspiration from four different aspects of the vast musical macrocosm that exists on the Indian subcontinent: Hindustani classical (north), Carnatic classical (south), Punjabi folk (west) and the Bengali mystical folk Baul tradition of both India and Bangladesh (east). There is also a major solo work with a tangential Tamil inspiration, one of Bengali polymath Rabindranath Tagore’s best loved melodies reimagined and a moving transformation of India’s “National Song”.
Unity comes from Thacker, as the single compositional voice that has either created or recreated all of the work on both albums, and the symbiotic relationship between the performers who, whether in the most breathtakingly intricate composition or ferocious and intuitive improvisation, search for truth and essence selflessly together. Music streaming services have today become the preferred platform for music consumption and competition is certainly hotting up. Recently Indian music streaming platform Gaana announced that it was the first streaming service in India to cross the 100 million mark in monthly active users (MAUs). This according to the company is expected to reach 200 million MAUs in the next couple of years. However JioSaavn, the merged entity of Saavn another leading player and Reliance’s Jio Music, has also claimed to have crossed the 100 million MAU mark. The platform claims to have 104 million MAUs and asserts that it is the largest music streaming service in the country.
Notwithstanding the claims and counterclaims, Gaana and JioSaavn are undisputedly the two biggest players in the music streaming space in India. But with the recent entry of Spotify, the world’s largest streaming platform, in India, the scenario could change significantly. In the very first week following the launch of its service Spotify claimed to have clocked a million MAUs and at present crossed the 2 million mark. And when you take into account other important players like Apple Music and Amazon Prime, competition to woo consumers is bound to get pretty stiff.
Since its merger a year back, JioSaavn has grown rapidly and recently offered a discount deal on its premium service JioSaavn Pro at Rs 299 for a one year subscription, which normally costs Rs 999. Gaana too has come out with a similar offer for its premium service Gaana Plus at Rs 299 for a one year subscription as against the regular price of Rs 1098. Spotify’s premium service is at present available at Rs 1189 for a year.
Is it the Spotify effect or the Jio effect, we don’t know but its good news for consumers.
On Easter Sunday, the world mourned the innocent lives that were abruptly ended in Sri Lanka. But for three specific artists, Apache Indian, Jim Beanz and Destiny, it made them reflect with truly heavy hearts, recalling their first and only visit to Colombo, Sri Lanka at the end of 2016. They happily traveled across the world to shoot a music video for their song “Save The World” which emphasized different social, economic, cultural, racial and religious issues. For award-winning songwriter and music producer, Jim Beanz, aka James Washington, this was his debut as a director and editor of a music video, after being totally inspired by the message in the song he conceptualized and wrote and chose Sri Lanka to carry out his vision. Cinnamon Hotels, who was a target for these heinous acts, believed in the message of the song and came on board to sponsor parts of the video. The idea behind the video was a simple one ...the artists would be walking thru the streets of Columbo, witnessing different acts of violence, turmoil and divide, stumbling into a peaceful church that they would use as a safe haven as they saw a woman praying. The ultimate message was about uniting races and cultures to show that we are all human and that we must stand together for the common goal of bettering the world!
Multi platinum reggae/pop singer/song writer and philanthropist, Apache Indian, born Steven Kapur, had this to say about the music video and song.. “This song “Save The World” was inspired by random, horrific, senseless attacks across the globe that have led to innocent people losing their lives. I personally feel frustrated like millions of others about what we can do in the aftermath of watching such devastation. Devastation that is the result of the bad intentions and evil minds of certain people, but it effects millions of good people and shakes the calm and peace we all strive so hard to create in our own worlds daily. We as songwriters have the power of words, melodies and music to express how we feel. We know that music is powerful and brings healing and change. This song in particular was conceptualized and written by Jim Beanz and we traveled all the way to Columbo, Sri Lanka to shoot the video. We felt the need to bring artists from across the globe to combine their talents to push out a strong message. Our emotions and feelings were captured in this song which ironically is now so relevant to Sri Lanka, the country, and its’ beautiful people, and I believe they’ll find some solace when they hear this song and reflect on the horrible events that just occurred there on Easter Weekend. Our hearts, prayers and thoughts are with the people of Sri Lanka and I hope thru this song we can continue to spread a message of peace, while asking who is going to ‘Save the World’? Only good people can do this as they must band together and stand strong to overcome the ill intentions of a few and we must not let them break our spirit or our own good intentions! Our prayers go out to our brothers and sisters in Sri Lanka, which is one of the most peaceful places we have visited and we all immediately became attached to the people, culture and country, so sending our strength and courage to everyone there today and always.”
Now, along with the rest of the world, these musicians are left broken hearted, that a country who once welcomed them are now suffering! However, through this song and the video that was filmed in the very streets where lives were lost, they wish for the healing process to slowly begin. Their hope is that through this video and song, people appreciate and find strength in the fact that “Save The World” was shot in beloved Sri Lanka and that one day soon the people can rise and stand tall again.”

Budweiser Experiences recently launched their campaign– ‘Be A King’, a powerful narrative that bolsters individuals to seize their opportunity to shine, brought to life by three inspirational protagonists – Divine (India’s leading hip hop artist), Siri Narayan (an acclaimed rapper) and Mokshada Jailkhani (a body positive dancer). ‘Be a King’ is an attitude, a mindset, and a war cry to young Indians who have the confidence to break barriers and stereotypes, and seize their opportunity to shine.
Directed by Gil Green, an internationally acclaimed director who has directed videos for Lil Wayne, Drake, Nicki Minaj and DJ Khaled among others, this campaign is his first project in India. Set in an urban underground nightclub with eclectic lighting that resembles a crown, Divine is seen rapping his vision of what makes a true king, and challenges the audience to seize their moment. Siri takes up the challenge with an almost fierce confidence, and eloquently raps her stance in Kannada. The story is complemented by Mokshada, a flagbearer of body positivity, who expresses herself through a riveting dance, unanimously conveying that Kings are not born, they are made as a result of their mindset, grit and ambition.
Commenting on the campaign, Kartikeya Sharma, Vice President Marketing - South Asia, AB InBev opined, “When it comes to expressing oneself, people are often conscious of being perceived as different and restrict themselves to conform to social norms. We know that our consumers seek the freedom to live the life they desire and seize opportunity to confidently be themselves. ‘Be A King’ is just that, an attitude that energizes you to follow your ambition, free from all judgement. For this project, we are thrilled to have collaborated with Divine, Siri and Mokshada – individuals who truly represent this spirit and resonate with the Budweiser brand ideal.”
Adding to the new narrative, Vivian Fernandes aka DIVINE shared, ““It’s great to partner with Budweiser, a brand that is always inspiring you to be unstoppable and driven. Personally for me, ‘Be A King’ is about being true to yourself and representing that. Over the years, through my journey, I have come to realise how important it is to challenge the norm and be proud of your individuality.”
Siri Narayan commented, “When one thinks of rap, one thinks of free flowing thoughts. But for me, rap is a mirror of myself which I am most comfortable expressing in my mother tongue. I often make a commentary on society in my songs, but I have never let society command the way I express it. I believe that we are all kings in our own unique way.”
Mokshada Jailkhani expressed, “Self-acceptance has played a key role in where I stand today. For me, ‘Be A King’ signifies a confident owner of ones’ own life and choices. Find your passion, go after it and Be a King!”

This track has a very defining use of accordion, complimented by a cello. Clinton Cerejo composed and sung an upbeat song, Aukaat along with Mr Amitabh Bachchan for the upcoming film, Badla. Aukaat is a high octane track in which Mr Bachchan is seen rapping along with Clinton Cerejo, Jizzy and Amit Mishra. The track has garnered immense appreciation and has been trending across various platforms.
Talking about his experience, Clinton Cerejo shares “ Aukaat is incorporated according to the theme of the film suggesting mystery and machismo and it's a privilege to have Mr Bachchan himself render the vocals on this track who delivered it with so much ease that he totally owns the song. Two amazing writers - Siddhant Kaushal and Jizzy helped me create the frenzy ending that the song has. Amit Mishra to joins in on the higher octave in the chorus & it sketches the essence of an edge-of-your-seat thriller.”
He further adds “It has been a beautiful experience working on this song and an honour to work with Mr Bachchan so closely. I have often heard that Mr Bachchan is a thorough professional but working with him, made me realize the intensity of this statement. He was particular about getting it perfect and even in this brief encounter with him I have personally learnt a great deal.”
Sharing a laugh Mr Bachchan says “I am humbled with all the love and appreciation the track has been receiving. This is my 3rd track with Clinton and it’s always fun recording with him. Initially, it seemed challenging but once we started, it became a lot more fun. Not to mention, Amit and Jizzy were also truly supportive throughout. I would like to jam with all them more often.”
The song which released last week is the promotional track of the film Badla which stars Amitabh Bachchan and Taapsee Pannu. The film has been directed by Sujoy Ghosh and releases in cinemas on 8th March 2019. Mr Bachchan has sung on Clinton’s composition earlier Kyo Re from the movie TE3N and Ekla Cholo Re from Kahani.

Multi-platinum, award-winning recording artist Extraordinary Being taken from her stunning upcoming new album Real Life, out June 21st. The track is released in collaboration with X-Men; Dark Phoenix. Evoking the spirit and exuberance of the disco era, Extraordinary Being sees Emeli push her sound further than ever. I hope the lyrics will help those lacking in confidence to be reminded of their super powers. The accompanying music video, which was directed by Sarah McColgan sees Emeli delving into a cosmic world, interspersed with scenes taken from the film. Emeli said about teaming up for the track,
“Fox approached me about collaborating with them on a song for X-Men: Dark Phoenix. I already had ‘Extraordinary Being’ in the works, and when I saw the film was blown away at how the lyrics of the song matched the journey of the lead character,” Emeli said about teaming up for the collaboration,“It really felt like the perfect fit!”. Extraordinary Being is the latest song to be taken from Real Life, an album recorded following an intense personal journey of self-doubt and self-discovery that marks a brand-new chapter and with it a bold, confident and fearless new sound. It’s an album emblematic of an artist emerging from that period defiant and powerful. Feeling attuned with the disenfranchised state of the world, the vision for Real Life is to give people hope and confidence.
With over 340 million video views, 19 million singles sold including 3 number one UK singles and over 6 million albums, Emeli Sandé has dominated the music industry and captured the heart of the Nation. Her debut album Our Version of Events, released in 2012, was the biggest selling album of that year and the second biggest of 2013. The album also broke the chart record for the most consecutive weeks inside the Top 10, breaking the 50-year record previously held by The Beatles. The singer has won numerous accolades including 4 x Brit Awards (Critics Choice, Best Album and Female Solo twice, most recently in 2017 for her second album, Long Live the Angels) and in 2018 was awarded an MBE for services to Music.

Joelene Dove is an Independent Artist- Singer, Music Producer, Lyricist and Composer based in Delhi In June 2019, Joelene Dove is coming up with an assortment of a few of her songs, an EP she calls ‘Maazi’ (meaning ‘Past') rightly so, since it contains her songs from the past and a latest single too. She’s also releasing 2 videos supporting the new single ‘Tukda- Tukda', and another for the song ‘Maazi. ‘Maazi’, in terms of music and song list, is closest to Joelene's heart…and one can see a plethora of emotions, many facets of the artist in it. As she says, “If you want to know me deeply, just listen to my songs carefully!”. And sure you will when you take a listen of this mesmerizing album.
Having belonged to a family of marketing and medical professionals, music was never an obvious choice for Joelene. However, a music and poetry loving family background did sink it’s teeth deep into her heart ‘n soul. So, after a few years of playing with the electronic media (Joelene worked as a TV editor, creative director, story producer and even an investigative journalist for a few television production houses), she finally ventured into music full time…leaving a ‘safe and steady’ job behind!
From a very young age, Joelene's life has been steeped in music and words- written, sung and spoken. Having spent her childhood listening to Hindi and Urdu poetry and songs… to spending her teenage and adulthood listening to and watching the biggest pop and rock stars, Joelene's personal choice of music doesn't come as a surprise! It’s like she has blended the two worlds using one mould, and the result is a beautiful, soulful and young voice of the soul…a voice of passion, a voice of angst, a voice of truth, a voice that is honest to the core. Her education in Literature and Philosophy also build an enigma through her lyrics, music and voice.
From penning some great scripts for TV channels... to writing articles on fashion, travel and philosophy for leading magazines of India..to giving poetic wings to her imagination and writing songs for various bands and solo artists in India, Joelene Dove has done it all. Joelene Dove is the proud winner of the 'Hungama Artist Aloud' Best Female Artist Award- 2010 for her single 'Savera', which she has penned, composed and given voice to.
Currently, Joelene, who also wears the cap of an Arts Consultant and Trainer, is the Director at 'The Music Monk', an organization dedicated to the nurturing and service of Arts, providing Arts training to students, and also teacher training, mentoring and Arts administration and consultation to educational institutions all over India.

High Court restrains Wynk & Airtel from providing downloading and live streaming services of Tips Repertoire.Justice Kathawalla of Bombay High Court in it order has observed that recently the music industry which has experienced a rise of over the top service providers, who seek safe harbour under Section 31-D to exploit copyrighted works, through either internet broadcast or download features, without seeking / obtaining a license from the owners thereof. In my view, such use of the copyrighted works, through internet broadcast or download features, without obtaining a license from the owners of the copyright amounts to usurpation of the exclusive rights of the owners to commercially rent, sell or communicate to the public their sound recordings.
In its order that will stop the way the OTTs had been exploiting the copyright content of various music labels without paying the license fee to the latter, the Bombay High Court issued injunction M/s. Wynk Limited, an Over-The-Top (OTT) platform & M/s. Bharati Airtel Limited (Airtel) from commercial rental or sale by way of allowing download in any manner, on its musical portal or Wynk App, of the songs from the repertoire of Tips and further restrained it from allowing interactive streaming of the said songs. The common order has been issued on 23rd April, 2019 in favour of Tips Industries Limited in in two Commercial IP Suits filed by it against Wynk and Airtel.
The Court while holding that the Sale/Commercial rental of sound recordings in a digital medium through the internet was no different than done through physical modes had inter alia observed that the activities of Wynk and Airtel, enabling its customers to download sound recordings and access them offline in lieu of a monthly subscription fee was essentially renting out the sound recordings which clearly did not fall under the exclusions provided in the definition of ‘commercial rental’ and were a vivid instance of a commercial rental as contemplated under the Copyright Act, for which Wynk / Airtel did not have any such right, authorization or permission of the Tips.
The Court also observed that with the purchase and download feature, Wynk was enabling its customers to store physical files / electronic copies of the Tips Repertoire on their devices in abrogation of the exclusive rights granted to the Tips under section 14(1)(e) of the Act. It also rejected the claim of Wynk that it being a broadcasting organization was entitled to a statutory license under Section 31-D of the Copyright Act, 1957 to communicate the work to the public by way of broadcast of the musical work and sound recordings of Tips.
While observing that in the provisions of sec. 31-D of the Act, the legislature intent clearly provided the distinction between the right to commercial rental or to sell on one hand and the right to broadcast on the other hand, it held that the provisions of the said section provides only for communication to public by way of broadcast of sound recordings and not their commercial rental and / or sale, thus excluding the latter activities from the purview of the statutory license issued under the said Section. It thus prohibited Wynk Limited and Airtel from exercising a statutory license apropos thereto.
The court also negated the benefit of Section 31-D as claimed by Wynk that it being a broadcasting organization were communicating to the public by way of broadcast of the Tips Repertoire over internet. It held that under the provisions of the Act and rules thereunder, Statutory License under Section 31-D, which was only restricted to radio and television broadcasting organisations, and no other broadcasting was contemplated therein including internet broadcasting. It held that the contention of Wynk / Airtel that they are broadcasting sound recordings over internet and that internet broadcasting is a type of audio broadcasting and hence internet broadcasting falls within the term ‘radio broadcasting’ was misplaced.
It was also observed by Court that Act and Rules therewith provide that prior fixation of the rate of royalty is the fundamental and primary criteria for any statutory license to come into existence in the first place. Without prior fixation of rate of royalty, there is no question of existence of any statutory license. Thus, Statutory License under Section 31-D of the Act does not “automatically kick in” once notice is sent to the owner, without fixation of royalty rates by the Appellate Board.
The court also observed that Section 31-D is an expropriatory legislation and the interest of the expropriated copyright owners must be considered while interpreting the said section. The interpretation of the said section as proposed by Wynk and Airtel would push the copyright owners into a perilous position where ‘internet broadcasting organizations’ could override the copyright owner’s exclusive right over their copyrighted works granted under the Act and use the works without their prior authorization / licence.
The Court also specifically rejected the proposal of Wynk to allow it to broadcast Tips Repertoire over internet upon payment of monetary deposit with the Court during the pendency of the Suit.
Mr. Kumar Taurani of Tips Industries Limited stated that the order manifests the the provisions of 31-D of the Copyright Act in its correct perspective, which were hitherto being mis-utilized by various OTTs. He was positive that the OTTs and other service providing platforms will now approach the first copyright holders for providing licensed downloads of their music.

Orange Festival of Music and Adventure 2018 ended on a high note with a grand performance by Iron Maidens, in Dambuk. OFAM, the unique orange themed Adventure and Music festival held in Arunachal Pradesh, grew even bigger in 2018 with more than 10000+ tourists and 30000+ locals attending the festival. As compared to last year 18 bands, this year the festival was attended by 28 music bands, including international bands like Thundermother from Sweden and others.
The event was inaugurated by Honourable CM of Arunachal Pradesh, Mr. Pema Khandu where he mentioned that the festivals like OFAM, which he initiated during his tenure as tourism minister, aim to spur the growth in tourism in Arunachal Pradesh. He also mentioned that Tourism would be a game changer for Arunachal Pradesh and help the state to improve connectivity in the region. This would also benefit the locals economically.
The idea behind the festival as mentioned by Mr. Abu Tayeng, OFAM director, earlier is to bring in people from all over the world to explore the wild natural beauty of Arunachal Pradesh and experience the local way of life and culture in an untouched destination. OFAM has been growing bigger year on year and becoming a huge attraction for tourists planning to visit Arunachal Pradesh. He also hoped that the next edition will be bigger and grander than this year both in terms of visitors and participants. He also said, “We plan to take OFAM on an international stage and create a buzz on national circuit as well. The festival attracts visitors not only from India but internationally as well, which showcase its potential. We hope that upcoming editions will receive more attention and fame, thus ensuring a bigger tourists’ inflow in the region and better employment opportunities for locals.”
Apart from enthralling music by 28 bands which performed on stage, crowds also witnessed the thrilling JKtyres 4X4 Fury, enjoyed adventure sports which were organized in collaboration with NIMAS and the natural beauty of Dambuk. This year 25 Indian bands from all over the country and 3 International Bands from different parts of the globe made the crowds groove to their music. From local favourites Trance effect to Thundermother from Sweden, bands gave absorbing performances which kept the energy levels high through the evening. Rains battered the venue on occasion, but the crowds braved the weather conditions and made their presence felt. Lead vocalist of the Iron Maidens, Kirsten Rosenberg said, “I was surprised to see the enthusiasm with which the crowd turned up even after bad weather conditions. She mentioned that hers is a tribute band and was pleasantly surprised to see how many music lovers came together celebrated in this beautiful location. Iron Maidens, she said, surely look forward to visiting again.”
Festival Proceedings had begun with cultural events and the flag-off of the JKtyres 4X4 fury rally event. Local favourites the Manabhum Off-roaders Club of Arunachal won the title with a slender lead of 5 points. They hung on to the lead which they gained on the first stage. Last year’s defending champs Gerrari Off-roaders finished in a close 2nd.
The scenic lower Dibung valley was a perfect setting for adventure lovers to get their fill of adrenaline in this year’s OFAM. With mighty rivers like the Dirang and Brahmaputra flowing in close vicinity and rainforests covered east Himalayan ranges surrounding the vast orange orchards, adventure activities like zip lining, para gliding, para sailing, white water rafting, dirt cycling, speed boating and elephant rides were the popularly enjoyed activities at this festival. OFAM organisers collaborated with NIMAS, National institute for Mountaineering and Adventure Sports a MoD run institute, for arranging the activities on offer. Many adventure lovers enjoyed the para motoring which took flyers on a 20 min flight over the entire Lower Dibung valley. The landing among the orange trees excited many thrill seekers and nature lovers alike. Zip lines passed over the orange orchards which gave participants birds eye view of the trees below. Rapids of grade 1+K3 and 2+K2 on a 10 km long route kept the adrenaline pumping for the participants of white water rafting. These rapids flung many rafts across the river, but teams learnt how to manoeuvre this force of nature with sound guidance from the NIMAS instructors. Elephant rides gave a leisurely vibe when compared to other adventure activities.
With so many adventure activities, hungry crowds were treated to delicious food and fine music on the day and night stages. Food stalls by the locals served up local delicacies like orange pudding, Rice wine, variety of local beers, egg with ginger, farm fresh orange juice and all time favourite Momos to name a few. Spotify is due to launch its own version of Stories-the sharing format popularized by social apps like Snapchat and Instagram then later ongot on too other apps like Facebook, YouTube, WhatsApp and others. They intend to call it “Storyline,” with the ides that artists can share their own thoughts, insights, inspiration, creative process, other meanings that is anything behind the music.Though it seems similar to what Spotify’s “Behind the Lyrics” feature that it offers,it is very much a Stories-like experience. The problems with wrong information made it not credible and they plan to sort it witis to to allow artists and their management teams to take control over what’s displayed as the song plays — while adopting the popular Stories format in the process.Currently Storyline is being tested for both iOS and Android, but not desktop. It’s available in the U.S. and in other markets, but Spotify isn’t commenting as to who may be seeing the test at this time or where. This feature give Spotify its own sort of original content. Original content has not been their forte in the past producing its own original videos was a dud. Hope they hit the jackpot now.

It’s amazing, when IKKA who’s been inspired by him and considers himself his little brother, then in turn co-writes & co-produces for his protégé RS Chauhan, making this full circle. I’m also very grateful to my long-standing in-house exec producer Rishi Rich for creating magic on this track, which has a lot of the Rishi vibe on it. This one is a sure shot club banger & already has people playing it on loop. The initial reaction is absolutely amazing.”

While traveling across the country filming America’s Musical Journey and meeting up with artists like Dr. John, Jon Batiste, Gloria & Emilio Estefan and many others, Aloe Blacc was inspired to write an original song, “My Story.” Aloe performs the song in the film at a concert on the National Mall in Washington DC.
“There’s something exciting that happens when different cultures come together as they have in America. One of the things that happens is incredible creativity.”- Louis Armstrong: Following the Footsteps of a Legend
In America’s Musical Journey, Aloe Blacc traces the footsteps of Louis Armstrong from New Orleans to Chicago and beyond, where his impact on jazz and other American musical forms was profound. Born at the turn of the century in New Orleans, to parents who were slaves, Louis Armstrong learned to play the cornet in a boy’s home. A creative prodigy from the start, Armstrong revolutionized jazz with his adventurous solos, bluesy phrasing and bold improvisational style, becoming one of the most influential musical icons of the 20th century.

Those of you who have been around from the 1960's through the 1990's will remember the vibrant live music scene in almost every starred hotel in India. Those were the days when you walked into a nightclub like 'Rendezvous' at The Taj Mahal hotel and 'Supper Club' at the Oberoi Sheraton in Mumbai to see curtains going up on a band that was the prime focus of these outlets. Every seat in these restaurants allowed an unobstructed view of the band that performed every night on resident contracts. Today all this has disappeared thanks to some ridiculously high entertainment taxes on live music. Today, non off these hotels have complete bands playing save for a few that feature small duos or solo singers. The Lodhi in New Delhi, recently listed among the world's best hotels, decided to step in and rewind to the good old days. They got Goa's premier jazz quartet 'Jazz Junction' to move to Delhi on a resident contract and the decision has paid off in terms of footfalls generated by the band. Jazz Junction featuring singer Daniella Rodrigues, pianist Tony Dias,
bassist Colin D'Cruz and drummer Angelo Colasco began playing at The Lodhi in June 2018. Four months into the contract the band generated a sizeable following, with quite a few high profile guests choosing to celebrate their special occasion at the Elan bar where the band performs. Against all odds the rewind option proved to be a huge success and hopefully other properties around the country takes the cue to trigger a whole new revival of live music.
