This year, in India, Menstrual Hygiene Day partnered with The Dharavi Project and India’s leading female rapper Dee MC to produce music that draws inspirations from personal experiences and a video that has reached over 2 million viewers.
Dee MC & TheDharaviProject’s commitment to create education about menstrual hygiene does not end with the association with the Day. They have extended interest in creating a world where girls can manage their periods safely, hygienically, without stigma and with dignity. And when a rap artist and an entity- After School of Hiphop are involved, this education becomes more fulfilled and fun-filled with music.
The Dharavi Project, Menstrual Hygiene Day and Dee MC will conduct a one day workshop in one of the most vulnerable areas of the world, Dharavi. Dee MC will use her viral song #NoMoreLimits,
https://www.facebook.com/MHDayIndia/videos/1980750378921508/ to encourage girls to share their personal stories of isolation and social stigma and find the strength in music to overcome them. The girls will also learn the art of hip hop in the process.
Together, they intend to create a community of girls who are there for each other, post the training. Activities that build trust and support are conducted to ensure a girl who comes into the training as an individual
leaves with a group of like-minded people she can share a journey with.
The Dharavi Project, with support from MH Day, will plan a series of performances that will be educational and entertaining, carrying the message of menstrual hygiene in lower income group and working class
localities. These performances will help end the silence around the issue and reach out to a larger community of people including men and women.
This music and dance school in Dharavi has been funded from the CSR budget of Universal Music Group in collaboration with Qyuki with the aim of identifying and grooming homegrown talent and providing them a platform to showcase their potential.
